Test Lab 009: Crème de Violette
Flowers at the bar
A little violet can send a cocktail in a very different direction. Test Lab 009 explores Rothman & Winter Crème de Violette and the ways floral flavor can change a drink’s aroma and balance.
A few clues before you taste
Two violets behind the bottle — Rothman & Winter draws its floral character from Queen Charlotte and March violets native to the Alps, carried on a brandy base.
The flower gets the spotlight — The producer’s recipe contains no added vanilla or fruit. That gives us a specific flavor to follow as the surrounding cocktail changes.
It has some famous company — Crème de violette appears in classics including the Aviation and Blue Moon. It also pairs with sparkling wine—an invitation to think beyond the familiar purple cocktail.
Where does a floral note become the thing that makes a drink work? Bring your curiosity. We’ll explore the answer one tasting at a time.
