Test Lab 012: Butterscotch Schnapps

A familiar flavor. A little bar history.

On November 4, Mr. Boston Butterscotch Schnapps gets its turn at Brass Monkey.

There’s some bar history behind the name. Mr. Boston’s Official Bartender’s Guide drew on the expertise of four working Boston bartenders, with recipes they had actually tested. Its digital archive now includes recipes from editions dating back to 1935.

The schnapps has a familiar brown-sugar-and-butter flavor profile. Its sweetness gives us something useful to work with: how much belongs in a cocktail, and what brings the whole drink into balance?

We’ll explore that through three cocktail tastings. You can follow what changes in the glass, compare notes, and ask the bar team how it all comes together.
